Don't allow former terrorists to whitewash the past - Ringland

NI Conservatives’ spokesman, Trevor Ringland, has stressed the importance of remembering the hurt and devastation caused by terrorist organisations.  Trevor made his comments after paramilitaries involved themselves in a commemoration marking the 100th anniversary of the original Ulster Volunteer Force.

“It is extremely unfortunate, but sadly predictable, that the terrorist organisation which calls itself the UVF attempted to hi-jack this march and link itself to the original Ulster Volunteer Force”, Trevor noted.  “The thing which should most concern us most about such incidents is the message which they send out to young people.”

“Whether it is republicans encouraging a small child to cut a cake gloating about the death of Margaret Thatcher or naming a play-park after a convicted terrorist, or whether it is loyalists linking themselves to the original UVF, we mustn’t allow these things to go unchallenged.  It’s vital that we remind the new generation what exactly these organisations did.”

“They caused suffering, murder, mayhem and they offered nothing to their own communities.  It’s extremely important that we don’t allow people with an agenda to whitewash the recent history of Northern Ireland.  Terrorist organisations were an appalling, destructive force and we should be teaching our children that they have no role to play in a peaceful society.”
