The Irish Open golf tournament, about to be staged at Royal County Down in Newcastle, will “showcase all that’s best about Northern Ireland and prove a source of shared pride for everyone in our community”, according to the Conservatives’ local culture and sport spokesman, Neil Wilson.

“This event has attracted some of the biggest names in golf and it’s a great advertisement for Northern Ireland”, Neil emphasised.  “We have an incredibly rich sporting heritage for such a small place and we achieve great things when we come together.  The Irish Open has brought thousands of visitors to Newcastle, which is a stunning location, and it will boost business there and further afield.”

“Sport has the potential to bring people together and shape attitudes for the better.  Northern Ireland’s golfers are a special source of pride for everyone here and it’s a powerful thing when they come back and compete in their home nation.  As a divided society we should take every opportunity to celebrate the positive things we share and use sport to craft a closer, more harmonious community.”
