BHS collapse - NI employees need to be able to find new jobs

Alan Dunlop, Chair of NI Conservatives, has commented on the collapse of BHS and the impact on staff in the Belfast stores.  “This case shows why the Government is determined to tackle corporate irresponsibility.  The report is very concerning, and the Insolvency Service is now carrying out an accelerated investigation. Jobcentres are standing by to provide support and advice to those who were affected. In the long run we need to do more to prevent this kind of irresponsible and reckless behaviour.”

The Business spokesperson and company director called on the parties at Stormont to ensure business in Northern Ireland benefitted from the measures introduced in England in the last Budget.  “From next year, small and medium size retailers will be permanently supported by a more generous Small Business Rates Relief and taken out of the higher rate of business rates. Some of the smallest retailers will not pay business rates again.”

“Staff who are losing their jobs at BHS in Northern Ireland need to be able to find new retail employment in a vibrant and successful economy that support business growth. The UK is the number one destination in Europe for foreign direct investment in retail, and the second largest source of outward retail.  It is important that Northern Ireland is part of that success.”
