Conservatives condemn decision to name playpark after IRA man

NI Conservatives’ spokesman, Trevor Ringland, has described the decision by Newry and Mourne District Council to name a children’s play-park after convicted IRA man, Raymond McCreesh, as “completely wrong and a terrible message to send out to young people.”

“Conservatives in Northern Ireland are absolutely appalled by this decision”, Trevor emphasised.  “It is absolutely vital for the future of Northern Ireland and for the future of our children that we send out the message that things which were wrong in the past are still wrong, whether we’re talking about Bloody Sunday, the Shankill Butcher murders or IRA atrocities like the massacre at Kingsmill.”

“Decisions like this run the risk of perpetuating hatreds into the future.  People who acted outside the law during the Troubles should be asked to reconcile with society, not the other way round.  Calling a children’s play-park after a convicted terrorist sends out an appalling message.”
